Prose and poetry pair naturally with wine and cheese. The Common, a print and online literary magazine based at Amherst College, welcomes students and parents for an evening of both! With readings from our newest issue, we promise a cozy evening that will satisfy all tastes.

Celebrate verse with The Common at the Amherst Poetry Festival. We’ll have a booth at Sweetser Park from 10am–5pm with poetry listening stations, a raffle contest, and baked goodies from Whole Foods. From 2:00–2:30pm, we’ll take the Sweetser Park Stage to read poetry from Issue 07. The festival also features live readings, conversations, the Emily Dickinson Poetry Marathon, and a special edition of NerdNite Noho. Click here for more details.

Perhaps it’s the close attention to reading, the classic New England landscape or reverberations in the air left by Dickinson and Frost. Whatever the reason, Amherst has long been a wellspring for poetry, and generations of Amherst alums have achieved remarkable success in the literary world. In this reading and discussion, moderated by Jennifer Acker ’00, founder and editor-in-chief of The Common, six emerging and established poets, critics, and essayists read from their work and talk about the ways their literary lives thread through Johnson Chapel and beyond. Featuring Rafael Campo ’87, Rachel Nelson ’99, Brian Simoneau ’99, and Tess Taylor ’99. A book signing will follow. Presented by the Class of 1999.

 

Have you ever read a novel and felt as though the author was speaking directly to you? Or about you? Guernica and The Common  contributors come together to read from and discuss fiction they feel was written just for them and who their own work is addressed to, if anyone. Featuring Benjamin Anastas, Dina Nayeri, Kiese Laymon. Moderated by The Common Editor in Chief Jennifer Acker and Guernica Senior Fiction Editor Meakin Armstrong.
